Bush wins his 100th high school match in January of his junior year
Wrestling teams in the area and across the state are hoping for nice weather this weekend with Glenvar High School scheduled to host the annual Highlander Invitational wrestling tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm Friday and pick back up at 9 am Saturday.
Salem High is one of 28 teams planning to attend, weather permitting. Others joining host Glenvar will be Christiansburg, William Byrd, Hidden Valley, Northside, Galax, William Fleming, Rural Retreat, Union High, Central of Woodstock, Holston, Lebanon, Chatham, Parry McCluer, Grayson County, Floyd County, George Wythe, Heritage of Lynchburg, Liberty of Bedford, Pulaski County, Grundy, Carroll County, Patrick County, Jefferson Forest, Martinsville, Radford and Washington High of West Virginia.

Glenvar has not been on the mats in competition since the “Big Blue” in Christiansburg on January 16 and 17. Salem had a tri-match last week against Lord Botetourt and Jefferson Forest in Daleville. The Spartans beat host LB, 47-30, and took down JF, 73-6. In the process junior Derek Bush picked up his 100th win as a Spartan. At this pace Bush would be Salem’s all-time winningest wrestler by the time he finishes his senior year.
“We had a ton of exhibition matches and saw many successes there as well,” said Salem coach Lawrence Van Liew.
The Spartans were scheduled to wrestle in a tournament in Orange County last weekend but that was cancelled due to the weather. The Spartans had a tri-match scheduled for Cave Spring on Wednesday but that was also in jeopardy due to the weather.
