The Gainsboro Branch of the Roanoke City Public Library is pleased to welcome the public to a reading of Mary Ellen Campagna’s new Y/A novel, UNA, Queen of Trouble, published by Gold King Diversity Publications, Inc.
The book is historical fiction, detailing the destruction that occurred as a result of Urban Renewal as remembered by a group of teens in the 1980s. It is dedicated to the memory of Evelyn Davis Bethel and Helen E. Davis, activists and civil rights pioneers in Roanoke; they were the sisters who helped to save the Gainsboro Library from destruction.
Campagna is a graduate of Hollins University and was a freelance reporter in the Roanoke Valley for over 25 years. She often covered controversial subjects.
A light lunch will be served at this event and there will be prizes.

Sorry to hear that Talk o the Town is closing after 60 some years. And someone should have wrote a story about them. Sad.

  4. Laura Byrd Earle says:

    Hello,

We are having a celebration of life for our father who passed away in January. We couldn’t have a funeral because I got Covid. We would like it to run in the Salem Times the week before. Who do I need to contact to get this done? How much will it cost?
Here is what it will say:
    I. Ray Byrd, Sr.
    September 1, 1928-January 30, 2022
A Celebration of Life for I. Ray Byrd, Sr. will be held on Saturday, June 4th. Please visit between 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salem Museum at 801 East Main Street. Friends and family please join the Byrd family for an informal gathering to remember Ray.

    Thank you so much.

  5. Cynthia Miller says:

Today’s newspaper includes an article about the upcoming elections in November. Under the new district lines drawn in last year’s Redistricting, Salem is now in the 6th Congressional district. While Morgan Griffith still lives in Salem, he will run for Congress representing the 9th district (Salem’s district before Redistricting). Representative Ben Cline is running for re-election in the 6th district, challenged by Jennifer Lewis.

  6. Theresa Baga says:
