Freedom reigns over Salem High boys’, girls’ tennis teams

Freedom High School eliminated both of Salem’s tennis teams this week in Region 4A West action in South Riding, VA. Both teams lost by 5-3 scores to the host Eagles.

For the girls, Isabel Danstrom and Ashlyn Pugh won at first and second singles while Danstrom and Lindsey Frank won at number one doubles for Salem’s points. Ashlyn and Morgan Neily were winning their doubles when the match was called because Freedom clinched the match with five points. Abbie Hoback played her singles match for three and a half hours and ended up losing in a third set tiebreaker.

The boys battled Freedom for four and a half hours before falling, finishing with a 10-5 record.

Johnny Danstrom, Alex Anama and Dejo Markovic won singles matches for Salem’s points. Ryan Walters lost in three sets, as did the teams of Anama and Markovic and Mladin Vukovic and Danstrom in doubles.

Salem’s singles and doubles for both boys and girls were elminated in the regional last week, ending the season for the Spartans.
