First regular season games for Salem, Glenvar just three weeks away
High School football is officially underway as the Salem and Glenvar varsity teams opened preseason practice last Thursday. Both teams have two scrimmages prior to their season openers on August 30th. Salem will practice from 9 to 11 am and 1-4 pm this week. The Spartans have been dealing with hot summer days but that hasn’t curbed the enthusiasm for the coming season.
“Our players have embraced the environment,” said coach Don Holter. “Our training staff does a great job. We have water all over the field and it’s available whenever needed.” The Spartans will scrimmage Albemarle and Maury in a triscrimmage on Friday, August 16, in Charlottesville. Then they’ll host a benefit game at Salem Stadium on August 23rd against Brookville.
The Spartans open the regular season at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg on August 30. Glenvar is practicing from 3 to 6:30 pm on Thursday of this week and 3-6 pm on Friday. The Highlanders will scrimmage William Byrd and Pulaski at home on August 16, beginning at 5:30 pm. They’ll play a benefit game at Blacksburg on August 23, then open at Galax on Friday, August 30. Andrew Lewis Middle School had a football jamboree scheduled for today but that was cancelled due to circumstances beyond the Wolverines’ control. Instead, Lewis will open the regular season a week from today, on Thursday August 15, at Patrick Henry
