The Roanoke College lacrosse team opened their Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule in style Saturday, taking a 19-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium in Salem. The win lifted the Maroons to 4-1 overall.
Eleven different Maroons scored at least one goal, led by IV Stucker with four. Kevin Jackson had three goals for RC, while Jason Sarro, Peter Lindley and Matthew Lintner two scores each. Sarro had a team-high three assists, while Stucker and Jackson each added two assists.
Roanoke outshot Virginia Wesleyan 59-22, led 46-27 in groundballs and won 13-of-23 face-offs. Reid Kaminski and Chad Fisher both had a team-best five groundballs in the win and Conn Curry had five caused turnovers.
Ian Davies played the first three quarters in the cage for RC, making seven stops before giving way to Burke McManus and Connor Poss in the final quarter.
Steven Jackson scored 1:13 into the game, notching an unassisted strike to make it 1-0. Stucker scored at the nine minute mark then again less than a minute later to make it a 3-0 game. Jimmy Kuzma scored the final goal of the quarter at the 4:03 mark.
RC scored four goals in the second quarter with a Lindley goal with 38 seconds left in the half that sent the teams to the intermission with Roanoke up 8-0.
The Maroons put the game away in the third quarter with eight goals to make to take a 16-0 lead. Sarro scored both his goals in the quarter and Stucker struck with 33 seconds to go to close out the scoring.
Roanoke was scheduled to play Gettysburg College at St. Anne’s-Bellfield in Charlottesville on Wednesday, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather. The Maroons will be back in action this Saturday with a 3 pm game against McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. That will be the second game of a doubleheader with the women’s team.
