The Glenvar Highlanders’ basketball schedule will pick up this week after a slow start. Glenvar had played just three games through Monday’s loss to Northside.
The Highlanders were scheduled to be back in action Wednesday with a home game against Covington. On Friday Parry McCluer will be here and Monday Glenvar is at Staunton River to make up a game that was postponed by snow last Friday night.
The Highlanders need the work, as the players who participated in football are still finding their “basketball legs.” With that, Monday’s game at Northside was a tall order as the talented Vikings took an 82-49 win.
“They’re just an outstanding team,” said Glenvar coach David Redding. “We’re still not in our rhythm, but they’re good about keeping you out of your rhythm.”
Northside pounded the offensive board against a tall and talented Glenvar front line.
“They hurt us on the boards and their guards are so athletic they smother you on the perimeter,” said Redding. “We played hard, we just didn’t have the manpower.”
Noah Duncan led Glenvar with 13 points and Noah Lovelace had 10. Mason Holliday also played well and scored eight points.
The loss dropped Glenvar to 1-2 on the young season. Last week they traveled to Parry McCluer and took a 36-33 win in a low-scoring game.
“It was a real slugfest,” said Redding. “They’re very deliberate and defensive-minded. You don’t get a whole lot of possessions so you have to make each one count.”
Redding is glad to have Logan Williams back with the team after he missed the first couple games with an injury suffered at the end of the football season.
“Our football kids are just getting back into it,” said Redding. “It was a long season for them.”
