The Fayetteville Woodpeckers and the Charleston RiverDogs are playing for the Carolina League baseball championship this week. The Mills Cup playoffs opened Sunday in Charleston with Fayetteville winning the first game of the best-of-three, 14-4.
Fayetteville is the North Division champion. The Peckers, a Houston Astros franchise, defeated the Fredricksburg Nationals in two games in the North Division best-of-three, 4-2 and 8-1.
The South Division needed three one-run ballgames to decide a winner. Charleston, a Tampa Bay farm team, won the opener in 10 innings, 9-8, over the Hickory Crawdads. Hickory, a Texas Rangers team, evened the series with a 4-3 win in game two but Charleston took the third and deciding game, 7-6, to advance to the Mills Cup finals.
Game two of the finals was scheduled for Tuesday in Fayetteville, but results were too late for press deadlines. If a third game was needed, it was scheduled for Wednesday, also in Fayetteville.
