The Salem High volleyball team will be at Hidden Valley tonight for a River Ridge District game against the Titans. The Spartans are 3-4 after a loss in Blacksburg Tuesday night.
It was a short game but a long night in Blacksburg. The Spartans lost in three, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-10.
“We had 22 serving errors, and it’s tough to win when that happens,” said coach Basil Conner. “We only had six kills in the match.”
The Spartans have now lost four in a row after opening with three wins. They played host to Cave Spring last Thursday and dropped a five set marathon. The visiting Knights led 1-0 and 2-1 in sets but Salem battled back both times to even the score before falling in the fifth and deciding set, 25-12, 16-25, 26-24, 9-25 and 15-11. Salem outscored Cave Spring overall, 97-91, but the Knights won their points at the most opportune times.
Kourtney Goens led Salem in kills with 15. Parker Price had seven kills and Jenna Wilkes dished out 18 assists.
This Saturday the Spartans are in Lynchburg to play two matches at E.C. Glass High School. They’ll take on host Glass at 10 a.m. and Mecklenburg County High at noon.
Next Tuesday, Sept. 22, Christiansburg is here for a River Ridge District match. The Blue Devils were the Class 3 state runners-up last season.
