This is somewhat embarrassing. After having the wrong games in the paper for our contest on October 1, we had three incorrect games in last week’s edition.
The October 1 screw-up wasn’t my fault, but last week was. When I looked at the college games on the internet I went down the list a little too far and selected three games that won’t be played until this week. So, I threw those three out and that knocked the contest down to just 12 games.
Then, as luck would have it, the Giants tied the Commanders on Sunday. Of course no one picked a tie for that result so I had to give everyone credit for that one as well. And with all those “gimmes,” still only one person got a perfect score. That was Salem’s Cissy Sowers so she’ll get the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s this week.
We also settled a contest from a couple weeks ago, when two contestants tied. We had a playoff last week and Danny Webb and Randal Sowers both missed three games. That went to the tie-breaker, which was high points of the week, and the high was 45 by New England. Danny had 56 for high and Randal had 52, so Sowers will get the $50 gift certificate by virtue of the tie-breaker.
And speaking of golf, last week’s 19th Hole question was to guess the score of the Roanoke College game with Hampden-Sydney. The final score was 39-33 in favor of the Tigers and the closest to that score was Phyllis Williams, who picked Hampden-Sydney to win 37-30. She’ll get a free day of golf at the Salem Municipal Course on Academy Street.
For this week’s 19th Hole give me your prediction on the Ohio State-Indiana game. You’ve had two weeks to think about it, so that should be easy.
