From a church parsonage in 1842 to the 2026 opening of the Shaun McConnon Discovery Center, “Discovery Rising” tells the story of science, technology, and innovation at Roanoke College. Set against nearly two centuries of world discoveries – from the telegraph and the theory of evolution to artificial intelligence, gene editing, and space exploration – this volume reveals how a small liberal arts college in Virginia became a powerful force in scientific education and achievement.
Curated by Glatha “Maggie” Madden, a 1969 graduate of Roanoke College, Discovery Rising features engaging narratives and more than 200 images and illustrations that guide readers through Roanoke’s evolution alongside the advances of the modern world. Visionary presidents, dedicated professors, probing students, and trailblazing alumni have impacted fields ranging from traditional to emerging sciences and technologies.
Madden graduated from Roanoke with a BBA and later earned an MBA from Emory University. She spent more than three decades as a managing consultant and executive director for independent firms, helping major national and international financial institutions improve their organizational effectiveness and profitability. She now works part time from her home in Amelia Island, Florida.
Madden will read an excerpt from the hardcover book and sign copies, which will be for sale at the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Salem Museum.
