WRESTLERS RETURN TO THE MATS, GHS 3-2 AT RIVER DUALS

The high school wrestlers will be back on the mats this week following the holiday break.

Salem had a home match on Wednesday against Northside, and this Saturday the Spartans will be at the Alleghany Duals. Next Wednesday, on January 11, Salem will play host to Glenvar in a dual match at the SHS gym.

Next Wednesday’s match will be the first action for Glenvar since the Highlanders competed in the “River Duals” at James River High School last Friday, December 6. Glenvar won three and lost two in dual matches, defeating Madison County, Covington and Radford. The Highlanders lost to Parry McCluer and James River.  Riverheads won the championship and Parry McCluer was runnerup.

“We were hit hard by injuries over the break, which resulted in three starters not competing,” said Glenvar coach Stan Malek. “I knew winning as a team would be tough with the injuries and forfeited weight classes, but all my guys got five matches for the day, which is why we like attending.”

Maxx Philpott won all his matches at James River and remained undefeated on the season at 19-0.
