Roanoke County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism along with Roanoke County Department of Economic Development and Tanglewood Mall are gearing up for another FREE “funtastic” Tons of Fun event. The 18th annual extravaganza for kids and families takes place at Tanglewood Mall from 10am – 4pm on Saturday, February 4. Magicians, inflatables, games, crafts, rides, face painting, performances, demonstrations and much more will fill the mall.
New this year are “FunStops”! Mini workshops designed for pint size adventures that will give hands on instructional fun. Learning a dance, investigating reptiles, plant a pepper, get a pepper fun and creating your own balloon animals are just a few of the explorations offered. Also this year, Mascots from around the Roanoke Valley will be joining us. Come visit with the Salem Red Sox mascot, Mugsy and the Pulaski Yankees Mascot, Calf-e. Sporty from Sports Clip, Green Ridge’s own Ridgie Bear and the Virginia 529 Tuition Monster among other mascots will be playing at Tanglewood throughout the day.
Performances this year include Southwest Virginia favorites, the Blue Ridge Mountain Cloggers, Art in Motion Dance Center and the Southernettes Baton Corp. Emcee Mark Fuller will captivate the audience with his magic show. New this year to the stage is Katherine Lawson, who will teach guests 50’s Sock Hop dance moves and Snookums the Clown with handbell fun for all ages
Favorites such as balloon artist Bobby Lilly, The Sonshine Company, and our strolling magician, David Castree of Find the Pea are back! Children of all ages will enjoy spending time with over 60 groups creating crafts like piggy banks, popsicle stick ballerinas, Valentine’s Day Cards, sun catchers, Lego creative builds, and cookie decorating along with many other imaginative interactive activities throughout the day. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about healthy living by creating first aid kits, and work out some of that winter energy while participating in soccer drills, fun food group relays and mini dance lessons. Don’t forget the camera to catch all of the FREE family fun, memorable moments and photo ops! – Submitted by Dawn Evans
