A longtime Christiansburg town councilman has announced his intentions to seek reelection this fall. Steve Huppert has served for the past six years and wants to continue in that capacity.

“I think the town has come a long ways and completed many major projects, but there are others on the horizon that I would like to be there for,” he said.

Huppert pointed to the Truman Wilson Park plan, improvements to the downtown and possible changes to an empty Marketplace shopping space as being things the town is working on that he hopes can happen in the near future.

He describes himself as a “small voice in helping Christiansburg become a better town,” and has been active in letters to the News Messenger, keeping citizens informed of what is going on around them. Huppert has lived in Christiansburg for 35 years and seen the town grow and change, and that’s where he believes he holds an advantage over other candidates.

Huppert currently serves on the town’s cemetery committee and as a liaison to the Aquatics Center advisory committee. He is proud of what the town has accomplished and believes the future his very bright.

Some of the things he cites as accomplishments during his tenure includes development of the farmer’s market and something dear and close to his heart—the extension of a walking trail into the town,.

Huppert earned his B.S. in business administration with a major in marketing from the University of Georgia and an M.S. in vocational education and guidance from Virginia Tech. He spent the majority of his career as a guidance counselor at Auburn Middle School and Christiansburg High School. He also coached a variety of sports for 25 years, including tennis, football, wrestling, and cross-country.

Huppert is a Vietnam War veteran who served with the 101st Airborne, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 28 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.
