The banners announcing the Salem Relay for Life event are seen at various locations in Salem.
The plans for the Salem Relay for Life event, to be held on May 13, 2017 in Longwood Park, are well underway. Organizational Committee Co-Chairmen Lisa Bain and Doug Graham are pleased that 28 teams are already registered, but there is still time for more to sign up. To register a team, go to the Salem Relay for Life Website at http://relayforlife.org/salemva
Plenty of activities and entertainment will be available during the event. Bands that are scheduled to play are Downtown Diversion, Southern Shine (Country/Southern Rock), Lee Palmer & Friends (Classic Country), Virginia Highlands Pipes & Drums (Scottish/Celtic) and DJ T-Wiz. Servpro will be donating their bounce house and there will be an inflatable obstacle course. A dunking booth with representatives from the Salem Fire/EMS department, the Salem Police Department and the Salem Sheriff’s Department are volunteering to get “dunked” for the cause! Food and beverages will also be available at various places throughout Longwood Park.
Current teams are: OneBeacon, Medico Security Locks, Inc., Loudon Avenue Christian Church, TMEIC, Pathlighters, Taylor Masonic Lodge #23, Railyard Relayers, Kancer Kickers, Andrew Lewis Middle School, First United Methodist Church, The Raffler, ADVANCE IT for a Cure, Cousins for a Cause, Bethel Baptist Church, Robertson Marketing Group, Cure Seekers, Damon Gettier & Associates, Forever Falcons, Tread Corporation, Hometown Bank, Mountain Pass Baptist Church and the City of Salem Technology Department. The Survivor’s Banquet is scheduled for April 20, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church. Cooking will be provided by Mama’s Angels and the guest speaker is Katie Varney, a cancer survivor. All teams are asked to provide items to be used for door prizes at this dinner. To RSVP for the Survivor banquet, contact the American Cancer Society office or Rebekah Price at Rebekah.Price@cancer.org or call her at 540-774-2717. This is a free event.
A number of fundraisers were held with proceeds going to the Salem Relay for Life, and there are some still underway that will end at the Relay for Life event. Check the website for additional information. Fundraising to-date is over $17,500, but with a goal of $60,000, more work is needed. Please consider signing up a team, or just provide a donation to one of the teams.
The FINAL Team Captains’ meeting is scheduled for May 8, 2017 at the Salem Civic Center at 6:00 p.m. There will not be a formal meeting at this time as this is Bank Night for teams to turn in any fundraising money collected so far.
There are not many days left to get registered. Get your team together and sign-up now!
