Chad Myers, a William Byrd graduate and current basketball coach at Massanutten Military Academy, was on hand last Friday when Massanutten retired the number 3 of former player Frank Mason.

Mason played for Myers at Massanutten, in Woodstock, VA, in 2013 before accepting a scholarship to Kansas University. Mason went on to have an outstanding career at KU, this year winning the Naismith Trophy for the nation’s top player, the Wooden Award and virtually every major college basketball award.

“Obviously we’re all proud of him,” Myers told the Northern Virginia Dailey. “He worked extremely hard. He put in the time. He deserved it, but it’s almost like it’s one of those things (where) you want to wake up and say, ‘Is it really true?’

“He’s obviously very thankful. I think he realizes how special it is and where he came from, obviously having a chance to do this. As a coach it’s rewarding to see him kind of grow up, not only as a player but as an adult and the different things he’s got in life right now — he’s got to go accept awards and go to banquets and hopefully get a chance to get drafted and all that kind of stuff. It’s exciting.”

Mason is a 5’11” guard from Petersburg. He originally planned to sign with Towson State but opted for Massanutten instead and it paid off with a scholarship to Kansas University, one of the top basketball programs in the nation.

Massanutten was 33-3 and enjoyed a number one national ranking during Mason’s year playing for Myers. Chad played for Paul Barnard at Byrd and went on to play college ball at Shepherd University in West Virginia, where he set several school shooting records.
