The Catawba Valley Farmers Market had a very successful Opening Day last Thursday, in spite of threatening weather, some wind and rain and a nearby downed power line that blocked traffic on Rt. 779.
Patrons had a selection of spring produce items from which to choose, along with eggs, honey, beef and pork products, assorted breads, desserts, and fried apple pies made on the spot. An array of hanging baskets, potted plants and bedding plants added vibrant color to the displays. Craft vendors showed a large assortment of handmade arts and crafts, ranging from pottery, hand-sewn table runners and wooden bowls to goat-milk soaps and scented candles.
Kathleen Reed, Assistant Extension Agent, Ag & Natural Resources in the Roanoke office, provided gardening information along with garden seeds. Courtney Henderson, a young Botetourt County dairy farmer and VT student, answered questions about life on a dairy farm and had several dairy-related handouts.
At the end of the Market day, a drawing for tickets to The Homeplace Restaurant was held. This was won by Angela Duffy of Catawba.
A highlight of the day was an appearance by Air7, the WDBJ7 drone operated by Rob Chewning. Video of the visit may be seen on WDBJ7’s web site.
The Catawba Valley Farmers Market is open each Thursday from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Catawba Community Center, 4965 Catawba Creek Road, in Catawba.
