Salem’s Kiwanis Field is the site of this week’s Conference 38 baseball tournament, and Glenvar is the top seed.
The tournament was scheduled to open Wednesday with Glenvar meeting Martinsville at 4 pm and James River taking on Floyd County at 7 pm. However, weather could be a factor with heavy rains soaking the field Tuesday night and more rain anticipated for Wednesday. The championship was originally scheduled for Thursday night.
As regular season champ Glenvar is already locked into a berth in the Region 2A West tournament. The Highlanders finished undefeated in conference play and the Highlanders ended the regular season with a 13-5 record, having won their last eight games in a row.
Last week the Highlanders finished off the regular season with wins over Floyd County and Covington. On Thursday at home Glenvar beat Floyd, 7-3, with four pitchers on the mound. Cody Alexander started and got the win with relief from Hunter Phlegar, Logan Lucas and Jacob Mullins.
Alec Thompson led Glenvar with three hits while R.J. Rorrer and Matthew Pulliam had two each. Pulliam had three runs batted in and Phlegar had a triple.
On Friday in Covington the Highlanders fell behind the Cougars, 10-2, but rallied for a 12-11 win. Glenvar scored a run in the fifth, five in the sixth and five in the top of the seventh to stun the host team.
Adam Veverka, Austin Meadows and Phlegar had two hits each for Glenvar and Phlegar had his second triple in as many days while driving in three runs. Meadows also had three RBIs while Veverka and Lucas had two each. Rorrer pitched the last four innings and picked up the win.
