As Donna Mills Carper drove down the meandering roads of Route 42, she paused as she came upon what Craig knows as ‘The Lookout’ and immediately took a picture.
Most of Craig County residents have driven to ‘The Lookout’ more than once in their lives, and for some, several times each year. “I drive up there all the time,” one citizen shared. “Every season I take beautiful pictures from up there.”
Though the land beneath ‘The Lookout’ is owned by the PSA and REA, many community members have enjoyed it as well as helped to keep it looking nice. Also, the Tourism commission has discussed the issue of cutting back some of the brush that is growing rapidly.
Roy and Nancy Taylor, lifetime residents, drove to ‘The Lookout’ for an Easter Sunrise Service the day after they got married.
Brenton Christian installed the current sign a few years ago as an Eagle Scout project he worked on. The Maywood Garden Club helped with the planting of beautiful juniper bushes.
Also, the Craig Beautification Committee started enhancing it, by paying someone to clean off all of the graffiti, and then they cleaned up all the trash and added a much-needed trashcan on site.
Most days you can see people pulled over with their cameras and phones in hand taking pictures, and pointing at their homes or places they recognize.
But more than anything, you hear so many echo the same thoughts. “Craig County is one of the most beautiful little towns, nestled in the midst of picturesque mountains which you can see for miles!”
