The Roanoke College field hockey team was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-1 loss to Centre College at Kerr Stadium in Salem last Sunday. Roanoke is now 7-1.
Centre broke open the scoring as Caroline Brotzge knocked a shot off the goalie to find the back of the cage and take a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest. RC answered 22 minutes later when Alexis Lester scored from the top of the circle off a corner, taken by Megan Diehl, to even the game at 1-1. The score stayed that way heading into the intermission.
Hayley Barker scored what proved to be the game-winner off a pass from Savannah Elpers to give Centre a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Roanoke earned a corner as time expired but a shot from Lauren Heffron missed just wide, securing the win for the Colonels.
Emma Clark made eight saves on the day for RC and Kristen Mulcahy made seven for the Colonels. Centre held a 17-13 edge in shots and a 12-8 advantage in corners.
Before the start of the game, senior Rebecca Schmidt was recognized for her career at Roanoke. Schmidt has scored 20 goals and added 10 assists for a total of 50 career points, which ranks 17th best in the history of the Roanoke program.
