The Salem High swim team will have a home meet tonight when the Spartans play host to Pulaski County and Cave Spring at the Salem YMCA. Warmups are at 7 pm with the first event to begin at 7:30 pm.
Both the Salem and Glenvar teams were in action last week. The Spartans swam at the Bedford YMCA against Jefferson Forest and Brookville. Jefferson Forest swept the meet, as the Cavalier boys scored 86 points to 51 for Salem and 33 for Brookville. In the girls’ meet Forest had 67, Salem had 59 and Brookville scored 43.
Among the bright spots for the Spartans was Nick Lawson, who qualified for the state meet in both the 200 and 500 Freestyle events. Brother Jake Lawson qualified in the 100 Fly.
Other Salem swimmers who achieved personal bests include McKenna Habeeb in the 100 Fly ( 1:05.02), Marleigh Hart in the 100 Free ( 1:05.74), Carson Pugh in the 100 Breast ( 1:23.59), Ellyn Anama in the 100 Breast ( 1:15.96) and Georgia Brown in the 100 Back ( 1:29.23).
Glenvar had a meet against James River at the Gator Aquatic Center last week. The Glenvar girls won 102 to 51 but the James River boys came out on top, 81-25.
Madylin Wheeler of Glenvar won both the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly and also swam on two winning relay teams. Aslin Kerr won the 100 Breast and 100 Freestyle and also swam on two winning relays with Wheeler, Reece Dunkenberger and Carly Griffith.
For the boys, Zach Stultz won both the 200 and 500 Freestyle races.
Glenvar had a meet at the Gator Center this week but results were too late for publication. The Salem swimmers are at the Bruins Invitational at War Memorial Hall in Blacksburg this Saturday, beginning at 8:30 am.
