The Andrew Lewis boys and girls basketball teams will participate in the Basketball Showcase Tournament, hosted by James Madison Middle School, at William Fleming High School this Saturday. The event was originally scheduled for last Saturday but postponed due to Saturday’s snowstorm.
The Lewis girls remained undefeated Monday with a 60-5 win over the Norsewomen at Northside Middle School. Rachel Lafrancois led the Wolverines with 17 points, followed by Mariah Gahl with a dozen. Kennedy Scales had seven points, Abbie Baker and Ryan Long had six each and Baker also had nine rebounds.
“I was proud of the way the girls came out tonight,” said Lewis coach Nat Franklin. “Our defense really got things going and it was nice the girls knock down some shots. Just a great team effort throughout the game.”
Last Thursday in Salem the Wolverines beat a scrappy Cave Spring team, 37-19. Baker had 22 rebounds to go with a game-high 13 points. Lafrancois had 10 points while Scales and Summer Bayne had five each.
“Cave Spring has good shooters, and early on we weren’t very consistent in keeping a body on those players,” said Franklin. “In the second half I thought we played smarter and our defense was as good it has been all year. Abbie (Baker) played really well and her rebounding was outstanding. ”
The boys fell to 5-6 on the year with two close losses. Last Thursday at Cave Spring the Wolverines dropped a 45-39 decision in a game that went down to the final minute. Hunter Bayne and Chauncey Logan had 11 points each to lead Lewis.
“I was impressed with our heart and tough play in that environment,” said coach Brandon Keith. “Cave Spring is always a tough place to play.”
On Monday at home the Wolverines lost to visiting Northside, 30-27. The Norsemen had won by a lopsided margin in the previous meeting at Northside.
“We played our best second half of the season as we battled the most dominant team in the area,” said Keith. “We did a tremendous job defensively, which sparked our opportunities to win the game. I‘m proud of the way we battled in our final home game of the season.”
Nick Owen and Tanner Dallas had seven points each to lead Lewis.
Both Lewis teams are back in action today against William Byrd. The girls will be at home and the boys play in Vinton.
