The Andrew Lewis girls’ basketball team finished a perfect 14-0 with convincing wins in the their last three games. The Wolverines beat William Byrd, James Madison and Stonewall Jackson in the span of five days to end the season.
Lewis took a 48-20 win over Byrd in Salem last Thursday. Summer Bayne led Lewis with 14 points and Mariah Gahl had 10. Cydney Williams had eight rebounds.
“I could tell the girls were really focused this week during practice and during warm-ups after Byrd gave us a good game earlier this season,” said Lewis coach Nat Franklin. “I thought the girls’ mentality and energy was the difference in the game.”
On Saturday the girls played in the Roanoke City Middle School Showcase and almost shut out James Madison, winning 53-2. Rachel Lafrancois had 12 points, Gahl and Bayne had eight each and Abbie Baker had seven points and seven rebounds.
“I thought our leaders did a good job of making sure everyone was ready to play,” said Franklin. “Everyone played good basketball.”
The final game of the year was Monday at Stonewall Jackson and Lewis won 47-6 to cap off an undefeated season. Kennedy Scales had 16 points and Williams had eight points and nine boards.
“I’m just really happy for this group of girls and what they were able to accomplish this season,” said Franklin. “This has been a great group to coach and be around. I look forward to seeing them all continue to grow, as people and basketball players, and reach the goals they set for themselves.”
