The Glenvar High wrestlers hosted the annual Highlander Invitational Saturday and Grundy was the team winner of the 12-school double elimination tournament. Glenvar finished fifth.
The Highlanders were third heading into the finals but all four wrestlers lost and settled for second, and that dropped Glenvar to fifth overall. Tanner Speight (106), Christian Smith (160), Brandon Saunders (195) and Maxx Philpott (285) all took seconds and Terence Maloney won his consolation final at 170 to finish third. Jacob Brown of Lord Botetourt was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, which is voted on by the coaches.
The Highlanders will head to James River High School in Buchanan this Saturday for the Three Rivers District tournament.
“I may only be able to fill eight out of 14 weight classes but that’s not stopping us from trying to win a conference championship,” said coach Stan Malek. “That’s my team goal and we’re not giving up on it.”
The regional will be held the following Saturday, February 10, also at James River High.
