GHS girls have home regional game Friday, winner will get Floyd County next Tuesday

The Glenvar girls basketball team will open Class 2A, Region C play at home Friday with a game against Fort Chiswell. Game time is 5:30 pm and it’s the first game of a regional doubleheader with the boys.

The Region C tournament has all 13 region teams in the bracket, with the top three getting byes. The top three are Martinsville, Chatham and Gretna, followed by Floyd County in fourth place and Glenvar is the five seed. That matches the Highlanders with 12th seeded Fort Chiswell to open.

If the Highlanders win, as expected, on Friday night they would play at Floyd County in the second round next Tuesday. That’s provided the Buffaloes win their opener, and there’s no reason to expect they won’t against the worst team in the region.

Glenvar has played Floyd three times this year and lost all three, including the Three Rivers District semifinal game at Floyd on Monday. That was a 60-39 final and it was the closest the Highlanders have played the Buffs so far. The game was tied 22-22 at the half.

“We kept switching up defenses on them and I think we confused them,” said Glenvar coach Brian Crockett. “They made some good adjustments at halftime and we started turning the ball over. You can’t beat them when you do that.”

Olivia Harris led Glenvar with 18 points, including five threes. Glenvar’s leading scorer for the season, Kiera Omberg, got in early foul trouble and had just two points for the game. If Glenvar is to beat the Buffaloes the next time around everything must go right.

“I think we can beat them,” said Crockett. “We can’t be making silly turnovers. We played with them for a half, why not for a game?”

The Highlanders are 12-12 after Monday’s loss. Last week they beat Radford three times, including twice to end the regular season and a third time Friday to open the Three Rivers tournament. Omberg had 23 Friday as Glenvar beat the Bobcats 41-30.
