The River Ridge District soccer quarterfinals will begin tonight at the sites of the top seeds. The tournaments will then move to predetermined sites on Saturdday, with the girls in Salem and the boys at Patrick Henry.
Salem’s girls will open tonight at home against Pulaski County. If they win they’ll move on to the semifinal round Saturday at Spartan Field at 1:30 pm. The RRD championship is Monday at 7 pm.
The Spartans are 11-3-1 on the season heading into the tournament. They defeated Cave Spring, 3-0, last Thursday at Cave Spring as Rachel Massey, Lily Barnes and Ellie Laub scored for Salem.
The Salem boys lost to Cave Spring, 5-2, at Spartan Field last week. The game was tied at 2-2 when the Knights got the go ahead goal with about 10 minutes to go. Cave Spring then scored two late goals as the Spartans tried to force the issue on the offensive end.
Drew Benne and Elliot Hall scored for the Spartans, who split the season series with the Knights.
“The only teams we have lost to twice this season are Blacksburg and PH,” said Salem coach Dean Jones.
The Spartans will go into the tournament at 4-7-4 overall and 4-5-3 in district play. It was yet to be determined where the opening round game would be, but the Spartans knew they would be playing Pulaski at press time. The Cougars played Cave Spring Tuesday, and if they won they would host the Spartans tonight. If they lost Tuesday, the Cougars would come to Salem for a game tonight.
The semifinals are at Patrick Henry Saturday and the championship game is Monday at PH.
