The Salem High baseball team ended the regular season with a big win Monday, avenging one of their three losses on the season. The Spartans beat Pulaski County, 6-1, behind a complete game pitching effort by Zion Honaker.

The sophomore southpaw struck out seven in a dominating performance against the team that ended Salem’s 11 game winning streak two weeks ago. Honaker allowed just three hits and also had two hits at the plate. His brother Zack scored two runs and Austin Sowers made three outstanding catches in right.

With the win Salem improved to 13-3 overall. The Spartans will open River Ridge District tournament play at home tonight against Blacksburg at 6 pm. The semifinals are at Kiwanis Field on Saturday, and if Salem beats Blacksburg the Spartans would play at 1 pm. The championship game is Monday at 7 pm at Kiwanis Field.

The district tournament means nothing as far as advancement or seeding in the Class 4, Region D tournament. Salem will be the number two seed, behind Lynchburg Christian Academy, in the regional and open with a home game on Thursday, May 24.

“I’m not going to burn my pitching in the district if it doesn’t mean anything,” said Salem coach Wes McMillan. “The regional is what’s important.”
