Each year, the Roanoke Valley Reading Council sponsors a Young Writers Contest. This year, several East Salem Elementary teachers had their students write haiku. Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry and is the shortest type of poetry in the world. Haiku poems only have 17 syllables and are written over three lines. Some students submitted haiku only entries, while other students submitted haiku + art entries. The Roanoke Valley Reading Council received over 400 haiku from schools throughout the Roanoke Valley. East Salem had ten students win awards at the regional level!
