On Saturday, June 2 at 7 p.m., the Coast Guard Band, under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Adam Williamson, will be performing at Salem High School.

The third performance of their 2018 concert tour, the program includes works by Sousa, Wagner, Bernstein, Hindemith, Marquez and others. Come out for an evening of vibrant music performed by one of America’s premier concert bands.

The concert opens with Leonard Bernstein’s overture to “Candide” followed by wonderful music from Verdi’s “Rigoletto” performed by clarinetist Noel Marcano. Also, on the program will be: Frank Ticheli’s “American Elegy,” “Millennium Canons” by Kevin Puts, John Philip Sousa’s “El Capitan” and the passionate “Danzon No. 2” by Arturo Marquez.

The United States Coast Guard Band is the premier band representing the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The 55-member ensemble is based at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. In addition to performing concert tours around the nation, the Band has also played in the former Soviet Union, Canada, England, Japan and Taiwan. In 2008, the Coast Guard Band became the first premier American military band to perform a concert tour of Japan. Concerts are free and open to the public and include a broad spectrum of music, from wind ensemble classics to swinging jazz charts.

This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and can be obtained online at uscoastguardsalem.eventbrite.com or at the Roanoke College Colket Information Desk.
