The Salem High tennis season officially ended this week as Spartan players were eliminated in Region 4D play, but not without some success. E.C. Glass High School hosted the tournaments in Lynchburg.
On Monday Salem’s Morgan Neily won her opening singles match against a Carroll County opponent and won 7-6, with a 7-5 tiebreaker, and 6-0. Morgan then lost to Megan Knight of E.C. Glass in the semifinals.
In doubles Neily and Maya Reddy of Salem lost to the Carroll County doubles team in the opening round.
“Overall I was very proud of our girls,” said Salem coach Mike Gibson. “They fought hard and didn’t back down.”
Johnny Danstom played singles for Salem in the boys’ tournament and won his opening round match over Peter Helm of Liberty Christian Academy, 6-0, 6-0. Johnny then went up against Wolfgang Ploch of Glass. Danstrom won the first set, 6-2 but Ploch rallied to take the next two, 6-4 and 6-3, to advance to the championship match.
