Ole Monterey will be the site of the second round of the Bob McLelland Metro Golf Tournament, beginning at noon today. The first round was scheduled for Wednesday at Blue Hills.
Salem High will be one of 12 teams in the field. Blacksburg will be heavily favored to win the Metro, but Hidden Valley, Franklin County and Lord Botetourt are hoping to surprise. The Bruins won the 24 team Heritage Invitational at the London Downs course Monday, shooting a 293 to beat Hidden Valley by three strokes despite having two starters out of town for non-school golf tournaments.
The River Ridge District regular season tour opened last week at the Pulaski Country Club and Blacksburg jumped off to a quick lead, shooting a 307. Hidden Valley was second at 316, followed by host Pulaski with 345 and Salem with 350. Patrick Henry and Christiansburg brought up the rear.
Daniel Poff led the Spartans with a 79, followed by Phoebe Stevens at 83. Freshman Hunter King shot 93 and Makena Witt rounded out the scoring with a 95. Logan Milton and Will Snyder also played for the Spartans.
The next River Ridge District match is scheduled for Monday, August 13, at Auburn Hills. The Glenvar team will make it’s debut that same day when the Highlanders host James River and Alleghany at the Hanging Rock Golf Club in Roanoke County. The Highlanders are not entered in the Metro this year.
