Carla Williams, Director of Athletics for the University of Virginia, will be the featured speaker at the Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting on Thursday, August 16, at the Salem Civic Center. Meeting activities begin at 5:45 pm with the dinner at 6:15 pm and program at 7 pm.
Williams, who was hired by UVA in 2017, became one of five female athletic directors in the country and is the first, and only, African-American female AD of a Power 5 conference. She had been an athletic administrator at the University of Georgia for 13 years prior to joining the Cavaliers. During Williams’ tenure as an administrator at Georgia, the Bulldogs won 16 NCAA team championships and 37 Southeastern Conference titles.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs’ athletic administration, Williams was in athletic administration at Vanderbilt and Florida State for seven years. She received a bachelor’s degree in sociology, a master’s degree in public administration and a Ph.D. in sports administration. She played basketball in high school and at Georgia. While working at Georgia, she became an assistant basketball coach for a few years.
In addition, the Sports Club will honor the State Champion Girls’ Tennis Team from Cave Spring High School.
