The 12th edition of Star B-Q, Salem’s unique country BBQ concert, featured two bands – headliner Maddie & Tae and opening act Crawford & Power. General admission tickets were $8 in advance and $12 at the gate.
Children ten and under were admitted for free. Throughout the concert, which took place at the Salem Farmers Market on August 29 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., attendees enjoyed barbeque from various restaurants throughout the Roanoke Valley. Maddie & Tae, consisting of members Madison Marlow and Taylor Dye, rose to prominence in 2015 with their debut album, Start Here. Rebecca Johnson purchased Start Here three years ago and considers it one of the best country albums of the last decade.
“I know all 11 songs by heart,” Johnson said with a smile. “Some musicians just know how to put on a great show, and I would consider Maddie & Tae such an act.” Karen Jackson celebrated her 33rd birthday by attending the 12th Annual Star B-Q with family and friends. “I didn’t know much about Crawford & Power, but they won me over at the concert,” Jackson said. “I’ve been a fan of Maddie & Tae for years, so I knew what they were about. I now see why this event is held in such high regard.” Proceeds from last Wednesday’s concert will benefit the Rotary Club of Salem.
