The Salem High golf season is officially a success.
The Spartans qualified for the Region 4 D tournament by finishing second in the west “sub-region” at the Hanging Rock Golf Club last Thursday. “Our season has been a success to get there,” said coach Thad Snyder of the regional tournament. “As young a team as we are, this is an accomplishment. From now on we’re playing on borrowed time.” The top two teams in the six team sub-regional qualified for the regional. Everyone knew Blacksburg, a state contender in Class 4, would finish first and the Bruins didn’t disappoint with a team score of 298. Ben Carroll of Blacksburg was the medalist with a four under par 68 and the Bruins had four of the top five scores in the tournament. Salem was second, 43 strokes behind at 341. The good news is, that was 11 strokes better than third place Carroll County’s 352. Pulaski County was next at 354, followed by William Byrd at 369 and Bassett at 404. As usual, Daniel Poff led the Spartans with a 78. Next was Alex Rea, who was likely the difference as he shot a career best 80. Makena Witt was next at 87 and also scoring was Hunter King at 96. Blacksburg and Salem will now join east sub-region qualifiers Jefferson Forest and Amherst Monday at the Winton Country Club in Amherst. The top two among the four will advance to the state, and Salem is a long shot to make it. “We’re hoping to finish fourth,” joked Snyder, who then added, “we have about as much chance as the ODU football team had of beating Virginia Tech.” So you’re telling me there’s a chance!
