he Glenvar baseball team broke up a no-hitter with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat  Radford Tuesday. The Highlanders won 3-0 in a Three Rivers District showdown at GHS.

For five and a half innings Glenvar’s Ryan Butler and Radford’s Daniel Hale were locked in a pitcher’s duel. Hale didn’t allow a hit through five and Butler was equally effective for Glenvar, not allowing a hit until two outs in the fifth. A double broke up Ryan’s no-hitter but the runner was thrown out at third on a beautiful 9-4-5 relay to end the inning.
Glenvar rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Jeb Secrist led off for the Highlanders and drew a walk. Justice Forster followed and bunted to the right side of the infield. Forster beat out the bunt for Glenvar’s first hit of the game and Secrist alertly advanced all the way to third on the play. Forster then stole second to put runners on second and third, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch as Glenvar took a 1-0 lead.
After one out Jordan Pickard came to bat and topped a ball to third, beating it out for an infield hit as Forster scored the second run. Jake Skelton followed with a clean single to left and Radford changed pitchers, and the first pitch by the reliever was wild as runners moved up to second and third.
Will Stacy walked to load the bases and there was still just one out for hot hitting Tyler Smith. He hit a grounder to second that scored Pickard with the third run for a fielders’ choice RBI and a 6-3 ground out ended the inning.
Butler worked out of a jam to end the game, getting a line out to Braden Poff to end the game. Ryan finished with a two-hitter, striking out six and walking just one.
“It was a win,” said Glenvar coach Jeremy Cromer. “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it.
It was a welcome result for the Highlanders, who improved to 5-7 after taking a 14-1 beating at the hands of Cave Spring Monday. The Knights won in five innings at Cave Spring.
The Highlanders are back home Friday with a home game against Carroll County, and that’s also a Three Rivers District game. Carroll leads the Three Rivers after beating Glenvar the first time around in Hillsville by one run. Glenvar is 2-2 in the district.
“They’re the top dog,” said Cromer. “We should have beat them the first time.”
