Glenvar teams battle to make Region C field

The Glenvar basketball teams are sitting on the bubble as the Region 2C basketball tournaments near. Both the boys and girls are ranked 10th in the region with 10 of the 14 2C teams having spots in the tournament.

The Glenvar boys are tied with Alleghany for 10th place, and the Highlanders play at Alleghany on Friday in what is, essentially, a play-in game. There is no Three Rivers District tournament, so the Highlanders’ season could be over if they don’t win at Low Moor Friday.

“There’s a lot riding on this game,” said Glenvar coach Todd Mann. “ If we don’t win, we need some help from others to get us in.”

Glenvar comes into the week at 9-12 overall and 4-7 in the district. The Alleghany game was scheduled for last week but postponed due to weather. The regional starts the end of next week.

The Glenvar girls are also in 10th place, and they’ve finished their regular season games. The Highlanders are 11-10 overall and 4-8 in district games and waiting for some others to finish to learn their fate.

“The way I understand it we’re 10th and Appomattox is the only team that could catch us,” said GHS coach Jeff Johnson. “They would have to win all four of their remaining games to outpoint us.”

Appomattox still has to play a strong Gretna team along with Heritage, Nelson County and Campbell County. Glenvar is off this week.

“We can use a week off,” said Johnson. “We’ve had a lot of sickness going around and some injuries.”

The Highlanders wrapped up the regular season with a 50-48 loss at Alleghany last week. Olivia Harris led Glenvar with 18 points and Rhyan Harris had 13.
