Everything was coming up roses for Maret Rose, who was the winner of our football contest from last week’s paper.
This Rose was a good gambler, missing just one game for the entire week. Maret was perfect through Sunday afternoon, getting a gift when the Pittsburgh-Tennessee game was postponed due to the coronavirus. Rose’s only miss was picking San Francisco over the Eagles on Sunday night. For winning, Maret will receive a $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and a large Blizzard from Dairy Queen.
For last week’s “Quick Change” question I asked you to predict the score of the Cleveland Browns game against the Cowboys in Dallas. I was actually surprised at how many people picked the Browns to win. The Cowboys had won the past four games and nine of the last 12 against the Browns, who haven’t had a winning season since 2007. Remember, the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996 and resurfaced as an expansion team in 1999.
This year the Browns are 3-1 and the Cowboys are 1-3 after four weeks, and no one is happier than Salem’s Gary Sovine. Of the folks who picked the Browns to win last week he was the closest to the final score, an easy “over” at 48-39. If you’re not a gambler, the number for the “over-under” to bet on was 56 total points for the game and it was at 55 by the end of the third quarter as the Browns held a 41-14 lead before hanging on for dear life to get the win.
Sovine picked the final score as 34-31 in favor of Cleveland, and that was the closet to the final score. So, for the second week in a row, he gets a coupon for a free oil change from Valvoline on West Main Street in Salem. Now he can service Carol’s car as well as his, and he’ll be trying for the kids and grandchildren next. Go Browns!!!
For this week’s “Quick Change” question we’ll go back to the college ranks. Texas is at Oklahoma this week in what is one of the nation’s most storied rivalries between powerhouse programs from bordering states, for those who know their geography. Give me your prediction for the final score of that game, put it in the space provided on the entry blank, and the closest to the actual score will get an oil change from Valvoline. –Brian Hoffman
