Norris Glovern Gearhart, 88, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 8, at his home. He was born on Thursday, February 23, 1933, to the late Huas T. Gearhart and Maurene Gearhart. Norris was active in the Salem community, serving as Scoutmaster for local Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV, which led them to join the Holiday Ramblers – an RV camping club. When his country called upon his duty, Norris served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Westside Church of Christ.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Velda Gearhart; sons, Michael “Mike” Gearhart and wife, Daphne, and Timothy “Tim” Gearhart; grandchildren, Laura Brunk and husband, Daniel, Ashley Emmond and husband, Jake, Thomas Gearhart, Chad Gearhart, and Elizabeth Gearhart; great-grandchildren, Devan, Caleb, and Kendra Brunk, Autumn Emmond, and Aiden Gearhart; sister, Rhonda Thurman and husband, Larry; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, 305 Roanoke Boulevard, 24153, with Pastor Neil Richie and Pastor Eddie Gilpin officiating.
Military Honors, as well as interment, will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton with Jake Emmond, Richie Emmond, Thomas Gearhart, Chad Gearhart, Dustin Belcher and Paul Wright serving as pallbearers.
