The Salem High volleyball team split their first two matches of the season, defeating Roanoke Catholic and losing at Northside.
The match with Catholic opened the season and was played at Andrew Lewis Middle School due to continuing construction at Salem High. The Spartans beat the Celtics in four sets, 25-15, 25-14, 16-25 and 25-8.
Salem was led by Kennedy Scales, who had nine kills, seven digs and three aces. Reese Redford had nine digs and six aces and Emma Johnson had eight digs and three kills.
On Monday the Spartans traveled to Northside and lost to the Vikings in three sets, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-16. Ella Walker had five kills and two blocks, Sydney Price had eight digs and two aces and Redford had six aces and eight digs.
The Spartans were scheduled to play at North Cross on Wednesday, but results were too late for publication. They’re back in action next Tuesday, September 7, at Patrick Henry.
