After a year off the Sandlot Super Bowl tournaments are back. The PeeWee tournament started last Saturday and the Little and Junior tournaments will begin this Saturday at two Roanoke County locations.
The PeeWee tournament, for eight and under players, began last Saturday with four games at Bogle Field, behind Cave Spring Middle School. The first game of the day was a thriller as the Salem Wolverines edged the Glenvar Highlanders, 2-0. No, the difference wasn’t a two-run single but a safety, as the Wolverine defense did what neither offense could do. . .score. Graham Conner and Watson Belcher tackled the ballcarrier in the end zone for a two point satety and that was enough to win the game.
Salem’s other PeeWee team, the Spartans, dropped a disappointing 6-0 game to the Botetourt Titans. Salem was without several key players due to COVID contact tracing and that may have been the difference as the Spartan team was stout all season. They don’t keep score during the regular season, but Spartan parents will tell you their team had been undefeated prior to the tournament.
Other first round PeeWee games had Cave Spring over Vinton, 14-0, and North Roanoke over Franklin County, 41-7. Semifinals are this Saturday at Glenvar’s Highlander Stadium with the Salem Wolverines against North Roanoke at 1:30 pm and Botetourt against Cave Spring at 3 pm.
The Little Division, for 10 and under players, kicks off this Saturday with four games at Bogle Field. The two Cave Spring teams play at 9 am, Glenvar and Salem play at 10:30 am, Vinton and North Roanoke play at noon and Botetourt and Franklin County conclude the first round at 1:30 pm. Semifinals are next Tuesday, November 2nd, at Glenvar.
The Junior Tournament, for12 and under teams, will begin Saturday at Glenvar’s Highlander Stadium. Vinton and Franklin County play at 9 am, followed by Glenvar and Botetourt at 10:30 am and Cave Spring against North Roanoke at noon.
Salem is the top seed and has a first round bye. The Spartans will play the North Roanoke-Cave Spring winner at 6:30 pm next Tuesday at Bogle Field in one semifinal with the other two quarterfinal winners meeting at 7:45 pm.
All championship games will be played at Salem Stadium on Saturday, November 6, with the PeeWees at 10 am, the Littles at noon and the Juniors at 2 pm.
