Salem’s Kenley Coleman controls the ball for the Spartans.

The Salem High girls were scheduled to play in the River Ridge District soccer championship on Wednesday night after finishing second in the district during the regular season. The game was to be played on the Virginia Tech pitch between the Spartans and first place Blacksburg.
Salem finished the regular season Monday with a 3-0 win over the host Knights at Cave Spring. Audrey Hayes and Avery Mangus both had a goal and an assist, Eliza Fleenor had a goal and Taylor Arons had an assist. Allison Kessell and Kennedy Scales split time in goal and Kessel had six saves while Scales had a save on a penalty kick.
Last Friday in Dublin the girls defeated Pulaski County in a River Ridge District game, 8-0, as Annie Bond scored four goals, Brooke Bowers had two and Kenley Coleman and Dayanara Garcia Escalante had one each.
On Wednesday of last week the girls shut out William Fleming, 14-0.
β€œIt was a team effort scoring goals off corners, from outside the 18 and off great runs,” said coach Kayla Wood.
Now 11-4-1, girls are scheduled to open the Region 4 D tournament a week from today, on May 26, against an opponent to be determined.
