The Roanoke College field hockey team tied the school record for consecutive shutout wins with a 7-0 victory over Sewanee on Saturday in a “Family Weekend” game at Salem’s Kerr Stadium, then broke the record Tuesday with a 2-0 shutout win at Sweet Briar. The Maroons have now won six games in a row by shutout and the record was previously set by the 2000 team which opened the season 5-0, all by shutout.
It didn’t take too long for the Maroons to score Saturday against Sewanee as Lindsey Keyes found the back of the cage at 6:29 into the game and the goal would prove to be the game-winner. Keyes would score again in the 26th minute off a pass from Viktoria Warweg and the Maroons led 2-0 at the half.
Josephine van Leyen added to the total at 34:55. Hope Keller, Saige Bullock, and Grace Vernarelli all scored in the second half for the Maroons. Madison Wingerter played all 60 minutes in goal for Roanoke.
The Maroons, now 6-2, return home to host Eastern Mennonite for “Senior Day” at noon Saturday.
