The Roanoke College women were scheduled to put their unblemished Old Dominion Athletic Conference record on the line with a home soccer game against Washington & Lee Wednesday. The Generals came into the week undefeated with a 3-0-1 ODAC record and an 8-0-4 overall mark.
Roanoke improved to 3-0 in the conference and 7-4 overall with a 2-1 win over Averett last Saturday in Danville. The win spoiled the Cougars’ Homecoming as RC came from behind for the win.
Averett opened the scoring when Celia de Diego scored at 35:26. It was also the only shot on goal the Maroons would allow for the game.
The Cougars kept the lead at 1-0 at halftime but Roanoke’s Morgan O’Neill took a pass from Brooke Nicholson as part of a drive down the middle of the field and at the top of the box. O’Neill fired the shot past the goalie to level the match at 1-1 at 61:38.
About 13 minutes later, Nicholson took a loose ball inside the goal box and fired a shot across the box to the upper left corner of the goal to give Roanoke the 2-1 lead and the win. The goal and assist for Nicholson was her second goal and assist of the season.
The Maroons are back home on Saturday for a 1 pm game against Bridgewater at Kerr Stadium.
