The Region 2C and 4D volleyball tournaments will be held this week with Glenvar serving as host site for the Region 2C tourney.
Salem opened the Region 4D tournament at Mecklenberg High on Tuesday with a hard-fought five set win to advance to the tourney’s second round tonight. Salem, the fifth seed in the tournament, will play the winner of a first round game between Western Albemarle and Louisa County. If eighth seeded Louisa won Tuesday that will be in Salem but if top seeded Western Albemarle won the girls will be on the road.
Tuesday night in Mecklenberg the Spartans won the first set, 25-19, but lost the next two, 25-16 and 26-24. The girls then evened things up with a 25-15 win and rolled to the win with a 15-2 thrashing in the fifth and deciding set to 15.
Mia Esworthy and Emme Custer led Salem with 10 kills each while Ella Walker, Kai Bowen and Reese Redford had nine each. Walker had five blocks and Makenzie Board had 39 assists. Anne Kayden Hall had six serving aces.
The win lifted Salem to 12-9 on the season. The tournament continues with semifinal games tonight and the championship is next Tuesday, November 8. All games are the sites of the higher seeded teams.
Glenvar had a first round bye when the 12-team 2C tournament opened on Tuesday night at four sites. Also having first round byes were Appomattox, Patrick County and Dan River.
The Highlanders will join the fun tonight, Thursday, when they play host to the winner of a first round game between James River and Nelson County. That will be at 6 pm at GHS.
The semifinal and finals are both scheduled for Glenvar High as well on November 8 and 9, and the two finalists will advance to the state tournament. Glenvar is the defending Class 2 state champ and the Highlanders enter this year’s tournament with a 20-0 record.
