The Glenvar volleyball team is in the state tournament, and at press time it was just a matter of where they were going to play when the Class 2 tournament opens Saturday.
Glenvar played host to the Region 2C tournament semifinals and finals this week. On Tuesday Glenvar defeated Gretna in three sets, 25-5, 25-13 and 25-7, in the semifinals. Audrey Conner had 36 assists, Hannah Hylton had 12 kills and seven aces and Sydney Loder had seven kills, three aces and three blocks.
The tournament championship was scheduled for Wednesday at Glenvar and the Highlanders had a big match with Appomattox, who beat Patrick County in the other semifinal Tuesday. Both Glenvar, the defending state champ, and Appomattox went into that match with identical 22-0 records. Both region finalists have a spot in the state tournament locked up but the Region C winner will host a state quarterfinal on Saturday at a time to be determined against the Region D runnerup. The Region D champ will host the Region C runnerup on that same day. The state semifinals are next Tuesday, November 15, and the state championship is at the Salem Civic Center on Saturday, November 19.
Glenvar opened the regional with a quarterfinal win over James River last Thursday at GHS. The Highlanders smoked the visiting Knights in the first set, 25-5, and went on to win in three, 25-9 and 25-12.
The Highlanders were hitting on all cylinders against River. Claire Griffith had 16 kills on 19 attempts and Ryhan Harris had nine kills on 10 attempts to lead Glenvar. Cara Butler had five aces among 30 serves.
