Andrew Lewis Middle School and Glenvar Middle School finished one-two in the Wolverine Duals middle school wrestling tournament in Salem last Saturday. The almost all-day event was held at the Lewis gym.
The host Wolverines went undefeated in five matches on the day. Lewis beat Pulaski, 87-12, Glenvar, 43-42, and Hidden Valley, 72-12, in pool matches to earn a spot in the final four. In the semifinals Lewis beat Blacksburg, 48-42, and in the rematch with Glenvar in the finals the Wolverines won 51-27.
Denny Toapanta, Rocket Cowling, Jayceon Preston, Robert Herndon, and Kafur Gulfan all went undefeated on the day. With the dual championship it improved Lewis’ dual record to 6-0.
Glenvar coach Jeb Wright was pleased with the runnerup finish. The Highlanders had some open weight classes, and that hurts in dual matches.
“I thought it went great,” he said. “It’s tough when you give up 24 points a match.”
