The Roanoke College golfers were in action when they traveled to Pennsylvania to compete in the Mason-Dixon Collegiate tournament, co-hosted by McDaniel and Gettysburg last weekend. The Maroons placed third in the 19-team field and defeated three of the top-40 teams in the most recent Golf Coaches of America Association (GCAA) DIII national rankings. On Saturday junior Palmer Cuny fired a 2-under par 70 to help Roanoke finish the first day in a three-way tie for the lead. Senior Michael Donnelly used three birdies to shoot an opening round 75. On Sunday Cuny followed up his 70 with an even par 72.
His 142 total would give the Pennsylvania native a share of medalist honors, finishing the event in a four-way tie for the win. A trio of Maroons would card 76’s as TJ Whelan, Sean Furlong and Brett Chodos each recorded 4-over par 76. Roanoke will play their final countable contest this fall when they travel to Farmville to defend their Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate title. The Maroons won the event last fall and look to repeat during the two-day event at the Manor Club on October 16-17.
