Two Salem runners competed in the Class 4 state cross country meet at the Oatlands Plantation 5,000 meter course in Leesburg, VA last Saturday. Zane Easter ran in the boys’ race and Addy Funk competed in the girls’ race. Easter finished 33rd out of 103 runners with a time of 17:15. The winning time was 15:33 by Tarek Benlamkaddem of Broad Run. High from Ashburn, VA. Blacksburg High of the River Ridge District was the team state champion with 52 points.
Charlottesville was second with 63 and Jefferson Forest, a fellow Region 4D school with Salem and Blacksburg, took third with 89. In the girls’ race Salem’s Funk was 65th among 104 girls in the state meet with a time of 22:04. Zoie Lamanna of Jefferson Forest is the state Class 4 champ at 18:21. Jamestown won the team championship with Loudoun Valley second and Blacksburg third. “This was the first time in the state meet for both Zane and Addy and they certainly ended their seasons on a very positive note,” said Salem coach Tom Roth.
