The Roanoke College baseball team
remained in the hunt for the top spot in
the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
standings when the Maroons split a doubleheader with Bridgewater Saturday. RC
won the first game in 10 innings, 6-5,
but dropped the nightcap, 6-4, at Salem
Memorial Ballpark.
That result put the Maroons at 11-5
in the conference, a game behind 12-4
Randolph-Macon. Lynchburg and Virginia
Wesleyan come into the week tied for third
at 10-6 with a week and a half left to play
before the ODAC tournament.
The Maroons still have a doubleheader to
play with Virginia Wesleyan at Calfee Park
in Pulaski this Saturday, as the Red Sox are
home at Salem Memorial. Roanoke will
end the regular season with a doubleheader
against Randolph-Macon in Ashland on
April 27.
Last Saturday in Salem the Maroons let a 4-0 lead slip away in the first game
when Bridgewater’s Ashton Smith blasted
a three-run homer in the top of the eighth.
Roanoke scored a run in the bottom of the
eighth only to have the Eagles tie it again
in the top of the ninth. Roanoke then got a
walk-off win on an RBI single by Tucker
Schiavoni in the bottom of the 10th to win
it. Cayden Freels had three hits, including
two doubles, while Schiavoni had two hits
and Kyle Moshier had a home run.
In the nightcap Smith homered again to
give the Eagles an early lead. RC cut the
lead to 2-1 in the sixth but Bridgewater
plated four in the top of the seventh.
Moshier and Freels each had three hits each for the Maroons.
Roanoke was scheduled to play a non-conference game at Greensboro on Tuesday, followed by an ODAC game at Ferrum on Wednesday. Saturday’s doubleheader at Calfee Park will begin at noon.
