Baseball and track are today, softball and two soccer games are Friday
The Region 2C tournaments begin this week and Glenvar High School will host five events in two days, beginning today.
The Highlanders will host the Region 2C track meet at Highlander Stadium today, Thursday. Field events begin at 1 pm as the event was moved up to try and beat anticipated bad weather.
The Glenvar baseball team will also play today, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 pm. The Highlanders are the second seed at 12-8, behind only Three Rivers District rival Patrick County, and they’ll host Dan River in the opening round. Dan River is the seventh seed and they’re cur- rently 8-12.
“I told the kids not to look at their record,” said Glenvar coach
Jeremy Cromer. “They’re always scrappy and they’re better than their record. I remember when coach (Billy) Wells was here they came to our home field and won the game. They won’t be a pushover.”
On Friday Glenvar will host three region events, begin- ning with the softball team at 5 pm. Glenvar will host Three Rivers District rival Floyd County after splitting with the Buffalo Gals during the regular season. Glenvar won at home, 3-2, but lost at Floyd, 7-5. The Highlanders are 12-8 while Floyd comes here at 11-10.
Two soccer games will also be played at Glenvar Friday and both Highlander teams are undefeated. The girls will host James River at 5:30 pm and the
Highlanders are 15-0-1, includ- ing two wins over James River. Glenvar is undefeated in Class 2 and their only tie was against Class 5 Franklin County.
The Glenvar boys will put their undefeated record on the line about 20 minutes after the girls finish. Glenvar will play either Patrick County or Liberty with final pairings still to be decided coming into the week.
The Glenvar boys are 16-0 and underscored upon in their last four games. They have 12 shut- outs on the season.
The Highlanders will open the post-season hoping to repeat last spring’s Class 2 state champion- ship. The Highlanders are 30-0-1 in their last 31 games, unbeaten since a 2-1 loss to Salem in April of 2023.
