The VHSL has announced the 2023-24 National Guard Cup Academic Activity winners. First awarded in 1990, the cup represents 35 seasons of excellence, with six cups awarded for academic activities and athletics in each of the VHSL’s six enrollment classifications.
For the five academic activities involving team champions — scholastic bowl, creative writing, debate, theatre, forensics, and robotics — points are awarded on the following basis: first place, 50; second place, 45; third place, 40; fourth place, 35; fifth place, 30; sixth place, 25; seventh place, 20; and eighth place, 15.
Scoring for publications is based on the ranking earned in the league’s evaluation service: Trophy Class, 35; First Place, 20; Second Place, 5.
Salem High School finished fourth in the state in Class 4 with 120 points. Rock Ridge led Class 4 with 151.6, followed by Jefferson Forest with 147.5, Blacksburg with 130 and Salem was next.
The Spartans scored points in three different categories. They earned 50 each in Forensics and Debate as well as 20 points in the magazine category.
Overall winners in each VHSL class include; Class 1 – Eastside (100 points); Class 2 – Clarke County – Total (120 points); Class 3 – Fluvanna County – Total (252.5 points); Class 4 – Rock Ridge – (151.6 points); Class 5 – Princess Anne – Total (350 points); Class 6 – Manchester (398 points).
